Your Ads Manager is lying about clicks

Not maliciously. It simply cannot see the thing that matters, and it bills you either way.

What a click actually means

A click is recorded when the tap happens and the browser starts loading. Everything after that is outside the platform's view: whether the page rendered, whether the store opened, whether the person saw anything at all.

So a tap that ends on a white page inside Instagram is, from Ads Manager's point of view, indistinguishable from one that ended in an App Store download. Same row, same cost, same healthy CTR.

Why nobody fixes this

The incentives do not point that way. Meta bills for clicks and has no reason to build a column that reduces billable clicks. Apple sees the request that never arrived, and has no relationship with your ad account. Your tracker measures the click too, from the same side of the wall.

Three companies can see the failure. None of them is the one paying for it.

What the numbers look like

Measured on 21,000 taps routed between 3 and 9 August 2026, 19,381 taps came from inside social apps and 95.6% of those were iOS. With a plain store link, essentially all of them would have ended on a blank page while being reported as delivered.

The dashboard would have shown full delivery for the entire period. Nothing in it would have been wrong, exactly. It just would not have been about anything real.

The one signal you do get

Click to install ratio, split by campaign objective. App install campaigns bypass the browser and look normal. Traffic campaigns route through it and look broken. Same app, same creative, same audience, wildly different numbers.

That gap is the only thing the platform will ever tell you about this, and it tells you by accident.

What to do with the knowledge

Stop treating the click count as a delivery number. Instrument the last step yourself: report from the landing page whether the escape succeeded, and compare it with the clicks you were billed for. The difference is your real cost per arrival, and it is the only honest number in the funnel.

Our links report exactly that: how many taps escaped the in-app browser and how many got stuck.
