Promoting an app with no budget
Free promotion is not cheaper promotion. It is the same work paid for in hours, which makes choosing the right hours the entire game.

What actually returns anything
| Channel | Hours to first result | Compounds? |
|---|---|---|
| Store listing improvement | 4-8 | yes, permanently |
| ASO keyword work | 6-10 | yes |
| Communities and forums | ongoing | somewhat |
| Short-form video | high, ongoing | occasionally, unpredictably |
| Content and SEO | very high | yes, from month three |
| Product Hunt and launch sites | 6 | no, one spike |
| Cold outreach to creators | 10-20 | no, but cheap to repeat |
The first two are underrated because they feel like admin rather than marketing. They are also the only items on the list that improve every other item on the list, since all traffic eventually lands on the same store page.
Start with the free multiplier
Before adding channels, make sure the ones you have arrive. When you post a store link in a community, a story or a creator's bio, it opens inside that app's browser rather than Safari, and on iOS the handoff to the App Store frequently fails without an error.
On 21,000 taps routed between 3 and 9 August 2026, 19,381 came from inside social apps and 95.6% were iOS. If you are promoting organically on social, that describes nearly all of your traffic. Losing part of it is expensive even when the traffic was free, because the hours that produced it were not.
Communities without getting removed
Reddit, Discord servers and niche forums can produce real installs, and will remove you instantly if you arrive as an advertiser. The pattern that survives is dull: participate for weeks, answer questions in your area, and mention the app only where it is the literal answer to a question asked.
- Read the rules of each community, which usually name the exact behaviour that gets you banned.
- A new account posting a link is removed by filters before a human sees it.
- One genuinely useful post beats ten promotional ones and takes the same time to write.
Creators, at zero cost
Small creators, under twenty thousand followers, will often trade a post for lifetime access or early features. Their audiences convert better than larger ones and they answer messages. The work is volume: expect one yes in ten, and send the eleventh.
What not to bother with
Paid review sites, install exchanges, follow-for-follow schemes and anything that promises downloads without a person deciding to download. They produce numbers that look like growth, contaminate your retention data, and in the case of incentivised installs can put the account at risk.
A realistic expectation
Free promotion for a new app produces tens of installs a week for the first month or two, not thousands. Its value is that it is compounding and it teaches you which message works before you pay to amplify it.
Free traffic that never arrives cost you hours instead of dollars. It still cost.
